Imperfect Food

I’m SO excited to share with you information about a new produce/food/beverage delivery service. But first, did you know that 40% of all food produced in the United States goes uneaten? There are several reasons including the appearance of the products, such as if there are blemishes or a piece of produce that is oddly shaped… in other words, IMPERFECT. 

Other reasons why products are trashed include over surplus, change of packaging or even short coded dates, which is another way of saying not enough time left on the “sale by date” that stores require. These products are deeply discounted.

What I like is they pick up your last delivery empty box and ice package and it’s reused or repurposed. One of my pet peeves with many food delivery services is that the packaging is often excessive and usually not recyclable. Not these guys!

Above is a picture of the box I received this week. I paid $22.82 for everything you see. The potatoes are organic, but you can see how they are not shaped perfectly, the avocados are not smooth and perfectly green. The brussel sprouts are unusually large. The quinoa doesn’t have the perfect ratio of three colors. The eggs, rice and coffee were part of an over surplus.  All this food would have gone to waste.

Imperfect Foods reminds me that with each box I buy, I save approximately 14 lbs of food, 560 gallons of water and 47.74 lbs of CO2 emissions. Now that’s something to feel good about!
